I once had an idea for a record store that dealt only in independent music. No major labels allowed. Based on the idea of a league of indy “teams”, or genres of music, I developed a series of stereotypical musical characters that represented each genre (seen below). The main face of the store (seen above) was a generalized derivation of those genres who either loved or hated what he was listening to. Obligatory genre jerseys were designed and represented the subtleties of each genre. The advertising attempted to create the main character’s ultimate nightmares: manufactured girl-pop, cookie-cutter boy bands and homogenized country-pop. Of course, there was a web site design that was derived from electronic equipment diagrams.
