Another rock band I was part of for a long time was Vailhalen (now ‘Key to the City’). One of our releases was called Pop Violence, and I was fortunate enough to get to design the thing (and be the bloody creep on the cover). Conceived as an abstract foray into pop rock, this entire album was recorded in a high school music room. Thus as was all the photography (which was all executed by John Gaucher). All the band members were slicked-up, bloodified, and photographed inside trophy cabinets in the halls of the school. As for the design, I had a ton of fun re-touching and placing everyone in the cabinets together. My favorite part was creating the inner spread, which appears as a mirror image, yet there is no center point and each person’s mirror image is just a little off. I also loves faking the smoke on the cover and adding touches of blood.
