Cow Boy is an illustration I created as a student, many years ago. The assignment was very simple – make a cowboy. My approach was to take it very literally. I crossed a cow with a boy and make him the happiest he could be. I decided to use a classic Lichtenstein-esque treatment to give it that blown-up comic book feel.
Cow Boy was popular for a little while, becoming a Chosen Image in American Illustration 21, appearing in Applied Arts’ Illustration/Photo annual in 2002, and being published on the cover of Prism International in 2003.
I was inspired to create a trilogy, including Holy Cow Boy and Cow Boy riding Like the Wind.
